Project Role: Commissioning Manager on behalf of M&E Contractor and Commissioning and Water Treatment Engineers

Project Information

The University of Edinburgh has transformed the iconic, category-A listed Old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh into Edinburgh Futures Institute, a space for multidisciplinary collaboration, data-led innovation, education, research, and partnership. The Futures Institute occupies the restored 20,000m2 space which includes state-of-the-art teaching facilities, rooms for co-working with industry partners, incubation areas for businesses, labs for innovation and prototyping, and exhibition and performance spaces.

The revitalised building transforms the local area, creating a major public piazza, new garden spaces, and several new points of access from Lauriston Place, Middle Meadow Walk and Quartermile – opening this historic site once again to the public and welcoming Edinburgh communities, residents and visitors, as well as University of Edinburgh staff and students

  • Over 5 floors of flexible teaching, working and study spaces
  • 22 meeting rooms​
  • Specialist learning and making areas including digital maker space, ideation studio, and project rooms
  • Generous multi-functional spaces for events, festivals and major lectures
  • Public piazza, outdoor spaces and Café 

Scope of works

Commissioning Management

  • Initial design and commissionability of all Mechanical & Electrical systems.
  • Co-ordination of commissioning processes to ensure that these are carried out in an order that maximises quality and productivity whilst being aware of any factors that alter timescales such as builders work or utilities. 
  • Quality control of the installation.
  • Collating, approving and managing of all commissioning documentation.
  • Governance of the overall commissioning process.
  • Witnessing of all tasks to ensure the client receives the building operationally ready.


Water Treatment & Commissioning

  • Flushing & water treatment of the LTHW & CHW systems to BG29/21. Combined volume of ~30,000 litres. This was managed through 2 phases to allow the end user to partially occupy the space.
  • Balance and of the LTHW & CHW systems via PICVs & DPCVs. Combined emitters ~900.
  • Balance of ventilation systems which included VAV boxes. Combined grilles/bellmouths ~650. 
  • Domestic hot water return and TMV validation.
  • Disinfection of domestic hot and cold water services.
